The PR wonks @ Toyota are trying to get folks to believe that loose floor mats are behind all 102 of the cases of unintended acceleration that have been reported on their vehicles. Right. That BS didn't work for Audi 20 years ago, so do they really think that the American public is that dumb today??

Apparently, our beauracrats are! Sheesh!

BTW, if you read any of the forums on these POS, there have been 5 previous recalls on these cars, so #6 may not be the last!!! (2004,05,06,06,07) NHTSA recently declined to recall these heaps for early headlight failures. It appears that they are avoiding the other major issue of total vehicle shut-downs (requires dealer re-boot) that have plagued Prius owners.

You're incorrect about the this car's brakes, remember that an elec motor has virtually unlimited torque, so it can overcome the pitifully small forces of those undersized brakes. I know that they're really small, because our pal Tommy G ran one of these POS Prius @ Laguna Seca & said that after a lap, the brakes were gone.

In reading this article, it stated that the crash involved a State Police officer driving the vehicle with his family. I can't believe he didn't have the presence of mind to shut the engine off or put the trans in neutral. Also, brakes will overpower any engine, just use them too!!!

I guess there are some really stupid people in this world who can't think in an emergency.

The geniuses at Toyota have fixed the problem. With a quick trip to the hardware store, some "donations" to NHTSA and Zipidy Do Dah, this one gets checked of the list.

Wait until the Tree Huggers that drive these electric buckets of crap learn that the "fix" isn't made from recycled organic shoe laces.

Toyota's told dealers to attach recalled floor mats to seat frames on the driver's side of affected vehicles with self-locking zip ties to prevent them from snagging on gas pedals, causing unintended acceleration and then, fiery death. Yes, zip ties.

NHTSA launches probe into 2000-2001 Toyota Tundra frame rust claims

Coming hard on the heels of its largest U.S. recall in history is news suggesting that Toyota could again face the wrath of the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. That's because the government agency is finally turning its eyes on the frame rust problem for 2000-2001 Toyota Tundras, a problem that has lit up owner forums for years. Toyota is no stranger to frame rust issues, as it has also extended the rust warranty of 1995-2000 Tacoma trucks and has even offered to buy back the trucks in 20 cold weather states at 1.5 times their Kelley Blue Book values. 2001 to 2004 Tacomas are already eligible for supplemental corrosion protection and replacement frames if necessary, but Toyota will not buy the newer trucks back.

The latest probe by NHTSA involves 218,000 Tundras from the 2000 and 2001 model year, as the government safety organization has reportedly received 20 reports of frames that have rusted to the point where some serious problems occurred. Five of the reports were for brake lining ruptured on the driver's side "rear crossmember at upper shock mount." The other 15 reported incidences involved spare tires which separated from the rear crossmember as the result of excessive rust. Sean Kane, president of Safety Research & Strategies told The Detroit News that the frame rusting problem is so severe that the "bottom can collapse." We take that as meaning that the frame of the Tundra truck can collapse under its own weight due to advanced tinworm.

Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons told the DN that the company is aware of the issue and is conduction an investigation of its own. The Japanese automaker claims that the frames were built by the same supplier which built the potentially defective Tacoma models, so we're thinking a similar issue could be a real possibility. Since the investigation is ongoing, Toyota has yet to officially accept blame for the issue, nor has it offered to repair or replace any defective frames. If NHTSA's investigation determines that 2000 and 2001 Tundra frames are defective due to excessive corrosion, the world's largest automaker may not have a choice. Hat tips to Rene and Alex.

NHTSA slams Toyota for ‘inaccurate, misleading’ recall statements

The government sharply criticized Toyota Motor Corp. Wednesday for issuing what the agency called an “inaccurate and misleading” statement about its planned recall of 3.8 million vehicles linked to sudden, unintended acceleration that may be due to more than improperly fitting floor mats, The Detroit News said.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s criticism of Toyota’s statement is the latest hit to the automaker’s reputation from what will be the largest safety recall in its history, the paper said. NHTSA said Toyota inaccurately suggested in a press release this week that the agency had concluded “that no defect exists in vehicles in which the driver’s floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured,” the agency said in a statement, the News said.
Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said the company hadn’t meant to mislead anyone, the paper said. “It was never our intention to mislead or provide inaccurate information. Toyota agrees with NHTSA’s position that the removal of the floor mats is an interim measure and that further vehicle-based action is required,” Lyons said in the story. “We are in the process of developing vehicle-based remedies to help avoid the potential for an unsecured or incompatible floor mat to trap the accelerator pedal.” (The Detroit News)

NHTSA probes timing of Honda airbag recalls

Honda Motor Co.’s recalls of 444,000 Accord and Civic vehicles for potentially lethal air bag defects are under investigation by federal safety regulators, the Automotive News reported.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it wants Honda and Takata Corp., the air bag supplier, to help explain why the automaker didn’t include vehicles from the second recall in the earlier one nearly eight months before, the trade paper said. The agency “requires additional information from Honda and Takata to more fully evaluate the scope and timeliness” of Honda’s recalls for the same defect, NHTSA said in a posting today on its Web site, the Automotive News said.
NHTSA, a Transportation Department unit, opened the investigation Monday, Nov. 2, according to the posting. Honda denied any wrongdoing and said it would cooperate with NHTSA’s probe, the story said. (Automotive News)

Toyota must submit data on rusting Tundras

Already facing a number of quality-related problems, Toyota Motor Corp. must submit information to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today in response to complaints about rusted frames on 2000 and 2001 Toyota Tundra pickups, the Automotive News reported.

NHTSA began a preliminary evaluation of the problem Oct. 6 and gave Toyota the Nov. 20 deadline, the trade paper said. The frames were manufactured by Dana Corp., which also supplied the frames for the 750,000 Tacoma pickups that suffered similar rust problems and were the subject of voluntary recalls and buybacks last year, the Automotive News said.

NHTSA is investigating 20 reports that relate to spare-tire separation and brake system failures resulting from severe frame corrosion on the pickups, the paper said. As of yesterday, the federal agency had received 238 complaints about the 2000 models and 48 about the 2001 models, the story said. (Automotive News)

Toyota to fix 4 million shitty gas pedals

Toyota Motor Corp. will reconfigure the accelerator pedal on 4 million vehicles that it is recalling to address a risk of sudden acceleration when loose or ill-fitting mats entrap the pedal, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said yesterday, The Detroit News reported.

The Japanese automaker also said it would install a brake override system on some of the models as “an extra measure of confidence,” the paper said. The recall was expanded from the initial 3.8 million announced in September because of sales of vehicles since then, the News said.

Toyota will reconfigure the gas pedal and, in some cases, reshape the floor surface under the pedal, to prevent unsecured mats from sliding and interfering with the gas pedal, the agency and automaker said, the paper reported. Toyota said dealers initially will shave about three-quarters of an inch from accelerator pedals. Replacement pedals will become available starting in April, but the replacements will be identical to the dealer-shortened pedals, the story said. (The Detroit News
